App turns iPhone into security camera

iVigilo Smartcam sends alarm messages via email and Twitter

If you have a second phone and want to keep your home safe if you are absent for a longer period of time, you can now use a tool from the iOS app store. iVigilo Smartcam http://www.ivigilo.com/Smartcam by the Dutch developer Naboo transforms your own iOS device into a mobile, wireless surveillance solution with various functions. If there is any suspicion, the program sounds an alarm via Twitter or email.

Motion and face recognition

The monitoring app is offered in two editions. The standard version is free and can only transmit video over the web. It can be used as an end-to-end monitoring solution, but it only makes sense if the user at the other end of the line is taking a look at his home.

"Smartcam Pro" is the paid version and costs 1,59 euros. It is also equipped with motion detection and can be set so that the recording is triggered by it. At the same time, the program is able to send a message to preset e-mail addresses or a direct message via Twitter if the worst comes to the worst.

The message can contain a snapshot or a link to the live video. Face recognition should make it easier to identify possible perpetrators afterwards.

Access via browser

The built-in server creates an administrator webpage as well as a public page. The first is used for remote configuration of Smartcam, the second for password-protected access to the transmission from the iPhone via any modern browser.

A device with iOS 5 and a camera is required to use the security tool. All iPhones from the "3GS" model, as well as the iPad and iPod Touch, are compatible with it.
