Facebook overtakes Google in accesses

Social network digs up the data from search engine giants
Facebook's popularity has reached a new high. Last week, the social network in the US recorded more hits than Google for the first time, according to a recent survey by Hitwise Intelligence. In the past, Facebook was only able to do this on individual days, such as December 24th or New Year's Day. The latest figures do not bode well for Google, despite their own moderate growth.

The core of the web business is data Facebook overtakes Google in accesses
"In addition to the access rates and the length of stay, the core parameters in the web business are primarily the data that users generate. Google threatens to lose valuable resources to Facebook here," analyzes social media expert Thomas Burg, Managing Director of Socialware http://www.socialware.at, in conversation with pressetext. Facebook could benefit from an almost frightening amount of personal data and information - only the evaluation and utilization for commercial purposes is currently lacking.
While Google was able to increase its market share of around 6,5 to seven percent of total Internet traffic in the USA by just nine percent compared to the previous year, Facebook recorded an increase of 185 percent in the same period, according to Hitwise. "The speed at which Facebook has grown over the past five to six years is impressive and is strikingly reminiscent of Google's rapid success in the search engine segment at the end of the 90s," says Burg.

Google is struggling with social media
Although Google also has a huge amount of data, it has so far struggled, especially in the area of social networking and social media. "Regardless of the brief hype about Wave, this venture, but also the new Buzz service, has so far brought little. With the search engine and Gmail, Google only has two strong sources from which data can be obtained," said Burg. In addition, Facebook can score enormously with the length of time users spend on the platform and bind users to the site for hours every day.
However, Facebook leaves no doubt that it intends to further expand the global user numbers of over 400 million. The company is planning to open its first office in South India shortly in order to set local development priorities for the meanwhile around eight million Indian users. But advertisers should also be attracted by the new presence in the Indian market.
