Samsung Galaxy S3 hammer or flop?

Galaxy S3: Praise and criticism for Samsung's flagship

First benchmarks with good prognosis for Exynos platform

That yesterday, Thursday, from Samsung http://samsung.com The presented smartphone "Galaxy S3" does not convince the trade press all along the line. In addition to the quad-core processor, there were no major innovations on the hardware side, so the reception in some media is correspondingly cautious. In particular, the phone's camera does not live up to expectations. Samsung tries to score with software innovations.

First benchmarks promising

Regardless of this, the new gadget is the most powerful Android phone to date. The device, equipped with the latest operating system version 4.0 "Ice-cream Sandwich", operates as expected on the basis of an Exynos 4 SoC with a quad-core CPU clocked at 1,4 GHz. This accesses one gigabyte of RAM.

The display relies on the second generation of "Gorilla Glass" technology to protect against damage and, with a size of 4,8 inches, has a resolution of 720 x 1.280 pixels, which corresponds to that of the Galaxy Nexus, which was released in autumn. In addition to mobile broadband - an LTE version will also appear in the USA, Japan and South Korea - the smartphone has Bluetooth 4.0, n-WLAN, NFC, various sensors as well as GPS and support for the Russian GLONASS navigation system.

The Korean electronics manufacturer thus lived up to most of the expectations. First benchmarks based on the pre-production models shown, such as those carried out by Engadget, indicate that the Galaxy S3 will probably top the performance for the time being.

Camera under review

However, two aspects are viewed critically by the specialist media and bloggers. Despite autofocus, HDR function and rear light amplification, the mobile phone's main camera with a resolution of eight megapixels is technically at a high standard level and thus below expectations. It was often assumed that the phone would take twelve megapixel images.

However, Samsung has placed the focus on the software, which should score with a fast response time, sophisticated recording modes, clever image optimization and easily accessible sharing. There is also a burst shoot function with which up to 3,3 photos per second can be shot. The front camera has seen a significant upgrade. This has a resolution of 1,9 megapixels and can record 720p films.

Occasionally, there are also fears that the battery could prematurely bend its knees in front of the hardware, despite the capacity of 2.100 mAh. However, Samsung emphasized several times that the new Exynos platform is very economical. Tricks such as adjusting the screen brightness via eye tracking are also intended to minimize power consumption. At 3 millimeters, the S136,6 is a little longer than its predecessor, but it just undercuts the already very slim Nexus in terms of thickness.

In stores from summer

The Austrian launch for smartphones will take place on May 29th. The Galaxy S3 will be offered by T-Mobile, 3 and A1, whereby A1 will initially be exclusively leading the version with 32 gigabytes of memory. Without a contract, the device is expected to cost 600 euros.
