You-it! 4.0: A practical writing aid for
File and directory lists

If you often have to deal with the documentation of, for example, music or archive files, then you probably know the problem that you can only get to the names of the files to be written with all sorts of tricks - and who wants to enter them again and again by hand? With you-it! you only need a few clicks of the mouse.

Simply drag the names of the files and / or directories to be documented from their folder (see picture above), the desktop or any other location onto the magnifying glass in Dir-It! S small window - and the file list is already on the clipboard.
From there it can then be inserted into a document using the usual insert commands (Ctrl-V or by mouse), for example in Notepad (see picture on the right), a word processor or wherever.

The options in detail

  • Which file names should be taken into account?
Here you can specify whether your special name list should only take certain files into account. For example, if only Word files are to be included in the list, enter ".doc" in the relevant text field. The filter can also be applied to the name itself. If, for example, you only want invoices to appear in the list, enter "Invoice" at this point. To switch off the filter, simply leave the field empty - or click the "All" button.
  • Which types of names should be adopted?
The "File names" option only transfers file names to the results list. The same applies to the "Directory names" option, where only the names of folders are permitted. Use the "File and Directory Names" option if you want both name types in the result.
  • How should subdirectories be processed?
Here you set whether directories and any subdirectories should be broken down. If this option is selected, any folder names that may appear will not be included in the list as such, but instead any file names it may contain.
  • Structure of the directory and file list:
The file and directory names to be documented can either be logged with or without the respective path. Select the item "With full path" to get the full name.
  • Notation of directory and file names:
With this option you can influence the spelling (upper / lower case) of the names in the result list. Select Do Not Change to keep the original spelling.
  • Sorting of directory and file names:
Here you can specify whether the name list should be sorted alphabetically or not.
  • Always keep the Dir-It! Window visible:
Because Dir-It! is based on mouse operations (drag-and-drop), it can happen that the Dir-It! dialog disappears under other windows while you are looking for the names from a folder. If you activate this option, however, the Dir-It! always the top priority and can no longer be covered by others.
