    TestDisk and PhotoRec  

TestDisk repairs both the partition table and the boot sector (partition sector). And if it gets stuck, it also completely rewrites the MBR.

TestDisk was developed to restore lost partitions and / or to make hard disks that no longer boot bootable again if they were caused by faulty software, viruses or human errors such as deleting the partition table. 

TestDisk can

• Repair the partition table, restore deleted partitions
• Restore a FAT32 boot sector from its backup
• Rebuild a FAT12 / FAT16 / FAT32 boot sector
• Repair the file allocation table for FAT
• Rebuild an NTFS boot sector

PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it works even if the disk's file system is badly damaged or formatted.
