USBDLM is a Windows service for Windows 2000, XP and higher that gives control over the assignment of drive letters for USB drives.

With USBDLM Standard letters can be defined for USB drives

Depending on the USB port, the drive size, etc. Conflicts with network and subst drives can also be resolved without configuration. Drive letters from card readers can be removed until a card is inserted.
As a Windows service under Windows, USBDLM is independent of the rights of the logged in user.

Features of USBDLM

  • Have conflicts with network and subst drives resolved (no configuration required)
  • provide a list of standard letters for all new USB data carriers, also depending on a large number of criteria
  • Remove drive letters from card readers until a medium is inserted
  • Have drive letters removed from USB drives and thus prevent access to them, also depending on the logged in user
  • Define an autostart action for each connected drive, e.g. use it to open Explorer
  • Display a balloon tip with the drive letter assigned to a new drive and start a program when you click the balloon tip

{slide=Installation}Simply unzip the ZIP file, eg to C:\Programs - a USBDLM folder is included.
Under Vista and Win7 it is better to install it under a different folder, eg "C: \ Tools", in order to avoid problems with the Windows "Virtual Store" (which may redirect the USBDLM.INI).
Then enter the desired LW letters in the USBDLM.INI. A sample INI is included - the USBDLM_sample.INI. Either create a new USBDLM.INI or rename the USBDLM_sample.INI to USBDLM.INI and edit it. {/slide}
