The end of Facebook Lite

Facebook discontinues the slim version "Lite" - Off after only seven months of test operation -

Facebook has discontinued its slimmed-down version "Lite". After only seven months of testing, the end of the Facebook version came, which was aimed primarily at users with poor or slow internet connections. In an entry on their own fan page, Facebook thanks the users of Lite and adds, "We learned a lot from the test with the slim version".

How many people actually used the slimmed-down version, Facebook has not disclosed. After a request from pressetext, it also remains unclear whether the social network has plans for a new lightweight variant or whether it will completely distance itself from the idea.

Too much left out
"I think a lot of the Facebook experience was left out on Lite - especially the money-making part," says Ray Valdes of Gartner Research. In addition, the decision could be due to the fact that the performance of the main page has been improved. Previously, Lite had been described in the media as a "kind of Twitter" because the slim version offered far fewer functions than the normal Facebook page.
On the Lite version, users could only post wall posts, put photos and videos online and surf the profiles of other users. Applications and additional features have been completely left out. "In some ways, the Lite version was like putting ad blockers on your site," said Mike Melanson of ReadWriteWeb.
