Fujitsu: mobile phone and Windows 7 PC in one

Hybrid device in the summer lineup of the mobile operator NTT DoCoMo

With the "F-07C", Fujitsu has developed the smallest Windows 7 PC in the world. It is also a hybrid device because the slider with its four-inch touchscreen can also be used as a Symbian mobile phone. The model is part of the summer device line-up of the Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo, which was officially presented today, Monday. It remains to be seen whether the Windows 7 cell phone will also be available in other regions - in Japan, the market launch will take place around the middle of the year.

Atom hybrid

The F-07C uses an Intel Atom CPU clocked at 1,2 gigahertz, with which Windows 7 runs quite smoothly, according to the first impression of the technology blog Akihabara. The display, on the other hand, offers a respectable resolution of 600 by 1.024 pixels, while a 32 gigabyte SSD offers enough storage space for applications such as Microsoft Office. The model, which is only 125 by 61 by 19,8 millimeters in size, also comes with a pull-out keyboard and can therefore be used as a compact work device on the go. In PC mode, it also supports WLAN connections.

The battery life of the Fujitsu device is rather limited at two hours in Windows 7 mode. But when the battery level is low, according to NTT DoCoMo, the F-07C automatically switches to the more energy-saving Symbian mode, which offers up to 600 hours of standby and 440 minutes of talk time. Then it functions as a GSM / 218G mobile phone that weighs just 3 grams and can also be used for HSPA data connections. In this operating mode, the user can use a microSD or microSDHC card as a storage medium for recordings with the five-megapixel camera, for example.

Lineup highlights

The Fujitsu hybrid device should come onto the market at NTT DoCoMo in June or July. The unusual combination of PC and mobile phone is one of the highlights in the Japanese mobile operator's summer lineup. Another highlight is Sharp's 3D model based on Android, which was announced last week. Also at the start are the LG Optimus Bright with the brightest screen in the world, Samsung's Android flagship Galaxy S2 and Casios Exilim CA-01C, which offers a 16,3 megapixel camera for FullHD video recordings.
