Microsoft and Nokia surprise at CES 2012

Award for Lumia 900, praise for Windows 8

Microsoft and Nokia caused quite a stir at CES 2012. The Redmond-based company received a lot of praise for the further developed version of Windows 8 and organized a "Smoked By Windows Phone" contest to advertise the new devices with their own mobile operating system. The new flagship, the Lumia 900, even received an award from the technology magazine CNET.

Windows 8 is maturing quickly

As the Windows 8 development team announced, Microsoft has apparently found a new philosophy with "Metro". At the fair, not only a number of future Windows 8 devices, but also a current version of the operating system expected for autumn were presented. This version brings a number of new features. With "Refresh your PC" it should be possible to carry out an automatic spring cleaning on the system, whereby personal data, settings and apps from the Windows Store are retained.

The function could at least delay reloading Windows in the future if the first signs of slowness become noticeable on the computer. On tablets, on the other hand, it is an alternative to factory reset. However, Metro has also learned something new.

According to the majority of press comments, new control gestures, intelligent drag & drop, the clever use of the zoom feature and other tweaks have contributed to creating a user-friendly interface. Windows 8 is said to have made a significant leap in development since the Developer Preview released last autumn. According to CEO Steve Ballmer, the early preview has already been downloaded three million times. A public beta version is expected to be released in late February.

Cell phone contest generates a strong response

The CES for Microsoft - for the time being the last participation for the company - had only started with restrained success. The opening keynote by Ballmer and various employees was perceived as entertaining, but it also received criticism due to insufficient information content. The latest Windows phone "Lumia 900" from Nokia was especially highlighted.

The successor to the "Lumia 800", which had been available in Europe for some time, was then pushed accordingly by Microsoft. Ben Rudolph, known as "The PC Guy" https://twitter.com/benthepcguy even organized a permanent betting deposit. At the Microsoft booth he invited to the "Smoked By Windows Phone" contest and let owners of other phones compete against his Lumia 900 in a speed competition.

Everyday activities such as taking a photo and sending it via Twitter had to be completed. There are no overall statistics, according to an unofficial interim result, the new lead device has only lost two of around 30 duels. Microsoft offered the losers the new phone as compensation and generated quite a bit of echo on blogs and in the Twittersphere with the competition.

Lumia 900 is "smartphone of the show"

However, Nokia also received a lot of positive feedback from the technical implementation. Various technology magazines highlighted the speed and ease of use of the smartphone. Good publicity, on which both WinPhone, which is only making slow progress in terms of market share, and the telephone giant from Finland, which has faltered in recent years, urgently need.

Representatives of the two companies cooperating in the mobile sector were correspondingly pleased at the award ceremony of the online magazine CNET. There, the Lumia 900 won the award for "the best smartphone on the show".
