Microsoft's Messenger will be the social media hub

Chat program integrates Facebook, Twitter and Co.

Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger is facing a complete overhaul. As Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced, the somewhat outdated instant messenger is to be converted into a modern social media center. In addition to the usual messaging functions and video chats in HD quality, the most important social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and StudiVZ will in future be managed directly from the Messenger.

Bing on board too

With this move, Microsoft wants to make its own messaging service more relevant again, especially since social media platforms such as Facebook themselves are successfully offering their own chat service. Microsoft's comprehensive concept of connecting all social networks, image and video platforms as well as its own search engine Bing to the messenger could prove to be a trump card.
Via the messenger application, users should keep track of all updates, news as well as videos and photos posted by friends. But also your own accounts should be able to be supplied with status updates and content centrally via the messenger. So that important news does not get lost in the impending flood of information, the new messenger is equipped with a favorites function that automatically prioritizes the contents of the most important friends.

Ten billion short messages a day

According to Microsoft, the new version will be released in beta within the next few months. The launch of the final version is planned for the end of the year. In addition, the group has also confirmed that it is working on a new mobile version for the iPhone and other devices. This should also be available in the coming weeks. According to Microsoft, the messenger is used by 320 million users. Around ten billion short messages are to be sent every day.
The big Microsoft Messenger competitor ICQ is also facing a number of changes. Until a few days ago it was part of the AOL portfolio, but the chat service has now been sold to the Russian investment company Digital Sky Technologies for $ 187,5 million. The price of 300 million dollars originally requested according to media reports could not be achieved. (mh)
