Motorola Xoom with Android 3.0 real competition for the iPad?

Google presents Android 3.0 for tablets

iPad answer "Honeycomb" tailored to app developers

Google is doing everything it can to repeat the smartphone success of its Android sales tactics on the still young tablet market. On Thursday night, the Internet company presented the latest 3.0 version of its Android operating system, which is marketed under the code name "Honeycomb". Unlike the 2.0 version, the current one is optimized for tablets, which means that Google enters into an open exchange of blows with Apple's iPad.

Bigger displays in focus
Android 3.0 is characterized by significant improvements in the multi-touch function, in multi-tasking and in the multi-core processor support. Graphically, it offers a new user interface with a 3D design, which is also suitable for larger displays, as well as revised text and voice input. Previous standard Android apps - especially the browser - have been revised and adapted for larger displays.
Google wants to lure the app developers in particular. Although Android 3.0 is already compatible with older apps and gives them an improved appearance, it offers new possibilities for the visual design of software. A UI framework, for example, offers interfaces with several columns with which the user can also interact individually.

Who’s the winner?
Motorola will equip its "Xoom" model with honeycomb before the end of this quarter, and Toshiba, LG, Lenovo and Asus have announced similar things.
If the date for Android 3.0 delivery has not yet been set, the race against time is now on. Because Research in Motion (RIM) with its Blackberry Playbook and Hewlett Packard (HP) are already in the starting blocks. And even the tablet pioneer Apple will not keep waiting long for a new version of its iOS system.
