Word – insert and edit date

Insert date in Word

There are several ways to insert a date in Word. Via the menu bar as text or an automatically updating field. A quick keyboard shortcut with editing option is also available.

Insert the current date into a Word document

1. Place the cursor where you want to insert the date.
2. Click the Insert tab on the ribbon and then click the Date and Time command.
3. Select the desired date format from the formats displayed.
4. The current date is inserted at the desired position.

This way, the current date is inserted as text and remains unchanged even if the document is edited again.

Insert an automatically updating date

If you want the date to be updated each time the document is opened, tick the box Update automatically. (See the screenshot)

If Auto Update is enabled, a faint gray box will appear after inserting the date if the Cursor* points to the date. This means: a field has been inserted that can be changed or updated.
