Windows firewall: block pings from the network?

Windows Firewall

In the tip Vista Firewall blocks a ping from the network wrote how to set the Vista firewall to block pings from the network. This article asks whether there is any use in not being found in the network.

The Windows firewall allows ping requests to be blocked. Is it possible to hide a computer in the network like this? The answer is "No". Here, for example, there is the ARP protocol.

Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

The protocol is used for address resolution from network addresses to hardware addresses. ARP runs automatically in the Windows background. The ARP has its own cache here, Mac addresses and the associated IP address are saved in the network when the computer is restarted, the cache is deleted.
It takes a while, but after a while you can display all devices in the network with the following command.

Microsoft Windows XP [version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C: \> arp -a
Interface: 192.168.0.10 --- 0x2
Internet address physical. Address type
192.168.0.20 00-10-1c-e0-9f-f1 dynamisch

So it is not Pointless to block the ping through the firewall in order to hide in the network. Every computer in the network (Internet) must respond to ARP requests, otherwise it would not be able to participate in network traffic.
With the command arp /? you can display parameters and information about the command.

Microsoft Windows XP [version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C: \> arp /?
In Linux there is the command arping With this command every computer is forced to answer regardless of whether it blocks ping requests or not.
