Use the Vista Program Compatibility Assistant

Vista - Run older programs with the Program Compatibility Assistant

vista_applications.png
Much has changed with Windows Vista, including the operation of some older programs that were written when Windows Vista did not exist. Some work fine, others just cause problems.

The first way to solve the problem should go to the manufacturer in order to receive a possibly existing update for Windows Vista. However, it happens quite often that older programs are not developed further or are only available for a fee for the latest operating system version ...

In this case, the Program Compatibility Assistant included in Windows Vista is used.
With it it is possible to fool the programs into the required operating system version.

Warning:
It is not recommended to use this with system-level tools such as anti-virus programs or disk utilities such as partitioning programs.
This can lead to data loss or unpredictable problems.

To run a program with the Program Compatibility Assistant go to
Start> Control Panel> Programs> Run older programs with this version of Windows.
The program compatibility wizard opens, which guides you step-by-step through the creation of the compatibility mode.
We choose the shorter way and click with the right mouse button on the corresponding program link, select Properties and there the Compatibility tab.

First we put a tick next to "Run the program in compatibility mode".
Now the drop-down field becomes active. A click on it opens and we can choose from the following compatibility modes

Be available:

  • Windows 95
  • Windows 98 / Windows Me
  • Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5)
  • Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
  • Windows Server 2003 (Service Pack 1)

Here we mark the required operating system and can now make various settings.

Run with 256 colors
The program uses a limited set of colors.
Some older programs were designed to use fewer colors.

Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution
Runs the program in a smaller window.
This setting should be used when the graphical user interface appears jagged or does not render properly.

Deactivate desktop design
Turns off transparency and other advanced display features.
This setting should be used when window movement is not working properly or when other display problems occur.

Deactivate scaling with high dpi value
Disables automatic resizing for programs when a very large font is used.
This setting should be used if the appearance of the program is adversely affected by very large fonts.

Authorization level
when activated, the program is run with administrator rights.
Some programs require administrator rights to run properly.
This option is only available if you are logged in as an administrator.

In addition, there is the button "Show settings for all users".
a click on it opens the window "Compatibility for all users"that offers the same options as the previous one.
The options there allow you to specify settings that apply to all users on this computer.

Finally confirm the settings with Okay.
There is now a good chance that the program will work properly again, but there is no guarantee that it will.
