Vista is probably set for large monitors by default, I can't explain the big desktop icons any other way. If you want to reduce or even enlarge the desktop icons, proceed as follows:
 


You have to be on the desktop to run the tip.
To get there quickly, minimize all windows with the Win key + d.

 

 

 

Shrink the desktop icons: Hold down the Ctrl key and scroll the mouse wheel backwards.

 

Enlarging the desktop icons: Hold down the Ctrl key and scroll the mouse wheel forward.
