Windows Vista Easy Transfer data transfer made easy

Today a little tip for all users who plan to switch to Vista at some point, but are faced with the following problem:
What do I do with my beloved data on the old operating system?

The solution is actually easy to explain and is called Easy Transfer, in German something like easy switch, move, transfer ...

Experts offer us the following definition of terms:

With Windows Easy Transfer you can transfer settings (user accounts, user profiles, files, emails, contacts and favorites) from another computer (Windows 2000, XP or Vista) to Vista.

Windows Easy Transfer is a simplified version of the User State Migration Tool (USMT), which was already available for data transfer in earlier versions.

How do I go about backing up my data?

There will be three main variants that the Vista program will offer under the Easy Transfer function.

  • The pure software solution.
  • The hardware solution with the Easy Transfer software and an Easy Transfer cable
  • The network variant

To 1. The software version for moving to a new computer

In this category I have a new computer with Vista version installed and would now like to get my personal data and settings from my old computer.
To do this I need the Easy Transfer software. It is located in Windows Vista under Programs and also as an independent tool on the Vista installation DVD. I can then use this DVD to install the program on my old computer.
This program will also be available for download separately from Microsoft until the public launch of Vista (previously January 30.01.2007, XNUMX).

So to the point when Easy Transfer is set up on both computers:

  • Start Easy transfer on the source computer (here old computer)
  • Now you choose the option: CD; Use DVD or other removable media
  • In the following dialog you can specify which data should be transferred. Basic settings relating to network, hardware, representation/display or regional and language settings can also be included.
  • After selecting, click on continue and you can then burn or save the data on the respective removable medium. That's it here.

  • Now only the data carrier and the file are inserted on the target computer.IMG00001Click on it and the Easy Transfer program starts. After Click on transfer the transfer is started and the data appears under Vista.

To 2. The hardware solution

In this case a Easy transfer cable required, which is currently offered by Belkin but is not available. However, the delivery capacity should be available in time for the lunch date.
This special USB cable connects both computers and the Easy Transfer software ensures data transfer between both computers.

To 3. The network variant

In my opinion, this is the simplest and cheapest solution for people who have the necessary equipment (both computers are connected via the network).
Neither removable media nor the somewhat expensive special cable (approx. 30 euros) are required here.
Simply start the program, the option Select network under Easy Transfer and continue as described above.

So much for the theoretical part for everyone who wants to switch. We can only hope that under Vista, as Microsoft promised, it will be easier to use the operating system in a clear and understandable way.
