Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) installation

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) installationvista_installation.png

The Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is not only intended to fix many errors, but also to add some new functions.
But what changes are involved, what is to be expected and taken into account when installing SP1.
In this article we want to show a small overview of the changes and innovations to be expected.

The installation

Before installing the final version of Windows Vista SP1, all previous versions of any non-final ServicePack installations must be uninstalled.
To do this, click on "Home".
In The Field "start search"give"Programs and functions"and then click in the list"Program" on "Programs and functions".
Click in the area "Tasks" on "Show installed updates".
Choose "Service Pack for Windows (KB936330)"and then on"Uninstall".
The final release of ServicePack 1 for Windows Vista can now be installed.

Note:
To install the download package, 4 GB of free space is required on the system partition, so this should be checked beforehand in order to avoid unnecessary installation interruptions.
It also seems advisable to close all unnecessary programs before the installation and to deactivate the virus scanner. Before doing this, however, the online connection should be disconnected for security reasons.
When installing the download package, you have to calculate about 1 hour of installation time, which is interrupted by restarts.

Scope of the service pack 1

As a stand-alone package, i.e. the complete download version, approx. 450 MB are required.
With Windows Update it is usually only approx. 65 MB

known problems

At the time of writing this article, although SP1 is available in its final version via Windows Update, there seem to be some massive problems.
On the test computer it was not possible to install the SP1 via Windows Update, accompanied by various blue screens, a total of 4 attempts failed.
Only the download of the stand-alone version and its installation was successful.
At the moment one can only advise against the risk of an installation, it seems better to wait a little longer until the SP1 has been revised.

Important changes

Desktop search
Due to a lost lawsuit against Google, the desktop search is now also open to others.
For the end user, this means that he can now define his preferred search function using the standard programs.

Copy
As a Vistan user, who is not familiar with it, copying data was often a test of patience.
Copying files has been significantly improved and is now usually faster, especially in the network.
The display of the expected duration of the process should be more precise.

defragmentation
Targeted defragmentation was previously only possible via the command line.
See our article on this
Windows Vista - Defragmenting via the command line
A menu is now offered in which individual hard disks or partitions can be selected.

Drive encryption Bitlocker

Windows Vista Ultimate owners have built-in drive encryption.
This now works much faster and can be configured using the icon in the control panel.
In addition to the system partition, other drives can also be specified for encryption.
New encryption methods have also been integrated.

Network diagnosis
This now also fixes problems with data shared in the network and is not limited to connection problems.

Windows Update
The speed should have been significantly improved here and fewer restarts should be necessary.

Password reminder
For a new installation with Windows Vista SP1, a "reminder" must be specified for the user password.

Remote Desktop Connection
The graphical user interface has been revised and is intended to make it easier to connect to remote computers.

Memory indicator
The control panel now shows the installed memory and not just the system memory used by Windows Vista.

System backup
While it was previously only possible to perform a system backup with administrator rights, standard users can now also start the backup with the administrator password.

User Account Control (UAC)
The user account control has been simplified in some areas, so now, for example, when creating folders in protected areas, less annoying confirmation licks are necessary.

Hardware support
Lots of patches have been released since the appearance of Windows Vista, the SP1 summarizes all of them again and also improves the functionality in some areas.

ReadyBoost
The efficiency of ReadyBoost devices has been improved
