The Turn off via the start menu is a bit cumbersome.
Three clicks are necessary to shut down Vista and the directly accessible switch-off button in the start menu puts the computer into energy-saving mode.
But what if I would rather have the power button right there and use the energy-saving mode in the list of options?
This can be changed quite easily with Windows on-board tools.
In the system control, the switch-off button can be used with the functions shut down, Save energy and hibernation be occupied.
To do this, we go to the control panel and select the corresponding assignment of the button in the start menu in the energy saving options in the active energy saving profile.
How do I create a shutdown button in the start menu?
Call up the control panel using Start> Control Panel
Now select in the standard view of the control panel System and maintenance
and there again the Power Options.
Should be the classic view of the control panel
be set click directly on power options
The dialog opens in which a suitable, predefined energy saving plan can be selected, but can also be individually adapted.
In this example is under Preferred energy saving plans the mode balanced set.
Now click below balanced on "Change power plan settings ".
The window will open "Change settings for power plan: Balanced".
We leave the options as they are and click on "Change advanced power settings".
Click for an enlarged view
Now select in the advanced settings Power switch and laptop lid and in the selection Power switch in the start menu.
Here you can now switch between the options Idle state,
Save Energy and shut down to get voted.
In this case we select Shut down and confirm with OK and close the still open Window "Change power plan"and from now on the button is in the start menu with the function shut down busy.
