Open Vista Clean up menu

Vista - "Open With Menu" clean up

vista_system_general.png

A double click on a program known to Windows Vista automatically opens the required application with the relevant file.
This is practical and good, but from time to time it may be necessary to start the same file with a different application.
The context menu entry "Open with" can be selected with a right-click.

However, if you start programs in this way every now and then, you will not get rid of them so easily from the "Open with list".

It is only possible to remove the entries again by editing the corresponding entries in the registry.
To start the registry editor go to Start> Run regedit followed by Enter.

In the started registry editor navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \
CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ FileExts

The key FileExts contains a large number of file extensions that Windows Vista uses to remember the alternate programs it adds.
To reset a certain file extension to its original state, it is sufficient to delete this extension.
A second possibility is the corresponding entry in the key OpenWithList deletion, this is located at the very end of the listed extensions

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \
CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ FileExts \ OpenWithList
