Fix Windows Update errors using the DISM or System Update Readiness Tool

Failure to install Windows updates or service packs may be due to corrupted system files.
The DISM.exe tool is a so-called system update preparation tool in Windows,
the Deployment Image Management Tool (DSIM) is in place and has a chance to fix these errors.

This tip is aimed at users of Windows versions Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012.
The tool is available in these versions.

However, it can be downloaded for versions Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008.
Here you have to consider whether a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows is available.

Use the DISM tool

An Internet connection is required to use the tool as DISM uses Windows Update to provide the files necessary to fix the corruption.

Enter in the search field or in the start menu Powershell .
Right click on Powershell and select Execute as administrator.

The Powershell opens
Now give the command in the command prompt dism.exe / Online / Cleanup-image / Restorehealth  .
Note the spaces in front of the slashes.
Confirm the entry with Enter.

It will take a few minutes so be patient.

The DISM tool creates a log file in the path  % windir% / Logs / CBS / CBS.log
% windir% corresponds to your real Windows directory. So in many cases C: \ Windows.

Restart your computer and try to install the Windows update again.
