Windows 11 - Use the extended clipboard

Advanced clipboard history in Windows 11

Windows 11 tips

We all use copying/cutting and pasting of content. This so-called copy and paste overwrites the last copied content and normally only ever makes the current clipboard content available. But the extended Windows 11 clipboard can do much more. It not only provides the last copied element, but also offers access to previously copied text or graphics in the clipboard.

 Activate the extended clipboard

In order to use the Windows 11 clipboard functions, it must first be activated.
This happens the first time you call it up with the key combination Windows key + V and press the button Enable.
Alternatively also below Settings - System - Clipboard. There are also a few more settings, as well as a help link and data protection notices.

Use of the enhanced Windows 11 clipboard

Once activated, it runs in the background and saves the copied items.
Graphics are also saved, see screenshot. It will text, HTML and bitmaps unterstützt.
However, Microsoft has set a storage limit of 4 MB per item.
In addition, the clipboard history is limited to 25 copied entries. Older items that are not pinned are automatically removed to make room for new clipboard items.

The Windows 11 clipboard

A click on the three small points of an item provides the options Delete and Paste as text.
If an element that is used again and again is used, it can be pinned with the pin symbol and is protected from deletion. Access to emojis, gifs, kaomojis and symbols is also interesting.

Conclusion

The enhanced clipboard in Windows 11 is extremely useful and can make working with text and graphics easier.
It can't come close to specialized tools, but it doesn't want that either.
As such, it is extremely easy to use.
I will certainly use the key combination Windows key + V regularly.
