In the "Windows 7 era" and the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit, many notebooks are sold with 4 GB of RAM. However, a Windows operating system based on 32 bit cannot fully use this 4 GB. Many notebook or PC owners are therefore looking for a simple way to use all of the RAM. One answer to that is "Make RamDisk". It not only has the advantage of integrating the entire 4 GB of RAM, but also gives Windows a noticeable performance boost if you turn the right screws.
What is a RamDisk?
A RamDisk is a virtual or temporary drive (data area) e.g. B. Dump file (E :) in memory. The content is deleted after a restart.
With the tool Gavotte RamDisk you can easily create a RamDisk with just a few clicks. It also shows how to moves the swap file to a RamDisk.
- Create RamDisk
- Move the swap file to the RamDisk
Create RamDisk
1. Download Gavotte RamDisk
Gavotte RamDisk can be run without installation.
2. Start Gavotte RamDisk
Gavotte RamDisk has to be started with administrator rights! Otherwise the error message appears Failed!
Once the zipped file has been downloaded and unpacked, right-click on ramdisk.exe and select “Run as administrator”. If the user account control is active, a security query will be asked as to whether you really want to run the program with administrator rights. Confirm this with Yes.
3. Create RamDisk
I am assuming that the computer has 4 GB of RAM and that all of the unused RAM is used as a RAM disk, which can of course look different in a different starting situation. Hold down the Windows key and then click Pause (Break), Windows shows the installed RAM and the RAM used.
It starts with a click on Install RamDisk. Then a window message appears with Install driver software. Here you click on "Install this driver software anyway".
Next I configure the RamDisk with Disk Size 1GB, Disk Letter M: and Media Type Fixed media. I confirm that with Apply.
There are three media types. 1. RAM drive (External drive) did not work correctly in the test after a restart. 2. Fixed media is the RamDisk as an internal hard drive and 3. Removable media can e.g. B. simulate a floppy disk in RAM.
The test didn't ask for a reboot, but I recommend rebooting after creating.
Only one RamDisk can be created with Gavotte RamDisk. If a RamDisk has been created and you start Gavotte RamDisk again, you can use Remove RamDisk, delete the created drive.
Move the swap file to the RamDisk
Hold Windows key and pause (Break)> Advanced system settings> Advanced> Performance settings ...> Performance options advanced> Change virtual memory
1. Create a swap file
On M: [RamDisk] and Custom size choose. Set Initial Size (MB) to 512 and Maximum Size (MB) 1022 MB and click Set.
2. Deactivate the old swap file
On C: [Acer] and No paging file Select and finish with Set.
After confirming with OK, a restart is requested.
Under Home > Desktop the result can be examined.
