Encrypt with BitLocker to Go USB sticks and memory cards

Windows Vista users are certainly familiar with the BitLocker encryption software.win7-logo.jpg
BitLocker encrypts the hard drive or the system area quickly and reliably.
BitLocker can be used to prevent unauthorized access to data from, for example, lost or stolen computers.
Unfortunately, a complex configuration was necessary up to now.
Now Microsoft has the tool for Windows 7 BitLocker donated some new functions and the name in B changed.

BitLocker: For all Windows 7 versions

The Windows 7 versions like Windows 7 Starter/Basic/Premium and Professional do not offer this fature.

Since work has also been done on user-friendliness, BitLocker To Go now simply starts with a right-click in the context menu.

Basically everything can be encrypted under Windows 7.
BitLocker to Go now also supports the encryption of external hard drives, USB sticks or memory cards or folders.

BitLocker to Go uses 128-bit AES encryption, which can be increased to 256-bit using the Local Police Editor.

Media encrypted under Windows 7 can be read with all Windows operating systems.
Write rights are only available under Windows 7.

To encrypt a USB stick, for example, simply right-click on a selected USB stick under Windows 7.
In the context menu that now opens, choose: Activate BitLocker.

Now the selection of the follows Access protection.
Here should: Password to unlock the drive to get voted.

After entering a password, the question about saving the same appears.

In any case, the password should be saved in a folder and printed out for security reasons.

This storage location can be saved with a freely chosen name.

If you have now completed this step, the encryption of the USB stick begins.

Depending on the size of the files it contains, this process can take a few minutes.
When this process is finished, you can see the stick as an exchangeable medium with a lock.

Also new is that there is an administration for the encrypted stick in the context menu.
You can choose from:

  • Change the password to unlock the drive
  • Remove password from drive
  • Add a smart card to unlock the drive
  • Save or print the recovery key again
  • Automatically unlock the drive on this computer

Most important is probably the last function.
If this function is selected, it is on after the stick is inserted Access without a password allowed.

If the USB stick is used on another computer, a password query is started immediately after it is plugged in.
However, if Windows 7 is not available on this computer, the USB stick can only be read.
In this case, files cannot be deleted or edited.

BitLocker to Go can only be removed by formatting the encrypted medium, but then all stored data will also be lost.
Bitlocker is unfortunately a feature of the higher Windows 7 versions 7 Windows Enterprise and Windows Ultimate 7which do not differ in the equipment, but only in the licensing.
