Partition Windows 7 system partition (enlarge / reduce)

Partition Windows 7

Partitioning a hard drive is a deep intervention in the system and was only reserved for people who were familiar with it. But since Windows Vista it is no longer a problem to do it yourself. Of course, there are still a few things to consider here and there. The next article describes how to reduce or enlarge a system partition with ease while the system is running.

1.0 Enlarge Windows 7 partition

To the program Disk Management to start, proceed as follows:
Windows key> Computer management and confirm with Enter
In the left menu the point Disk Management choose.
Disk Management

We look at the volume that we want to enlarge or reduce. In this case it is Disk 0.

Important: A data carrier can only be enlarged (expanded) if there is free space directly behind the partition to be enlarged.

In the following picture you can see that there is no free space and therefore the partition cannot be enlarged.

As a result, in this example only the partition Windows 7 can be enlarged. To enlarge this partition, click with the right mouse button on the Windows 7 partition and select in the context menu Extend Volume ... .

1.1 Extend Volume Wizard
In the next window simply with Next> to confirm.

If you have several partitions to choose from, you can select a partition, otherwise Windows 7 will automatically select the entire free space. Here you can enter the size in MB by which size you want to enlarge the partition. If you want to use the entire free storage space, you simply confirm with Next>. The settings are displayed in the next window. If you click on Complete the Windows 7 partition is enlarged.

Now the Windows 7 partition is enlarged, as can be seen in the following picture.

2.0 shrink partition

Shrinking partitions is just as easy. Start Disk Management as described above and proceed as follows:

When reducing the size, select the partition with the right mouse button and click on in the context menu Shrink Volume ...

In the next window, Windows 7 shows the available space by which the partition can be reduced. In our example we choose 10.000 MB.

Reduce partition by 10000 MB
Shrink partition by 10000 MB

And already 9,77 GB of storage space is available.

Tip: You can certainly do a lot with Windows 7, but unfortunately not everything. The GParted program leaves little to be desired and is also free of charge.
