More and more software is distributed as a download in a single ISO image. The rapid availability has the disadvantage that the user first has to burn the ISO image onto a data carrier. The alternative is to simply mount the image as a virtual drive. This can then be accessed like a normal data carrier and, for example, a setup can be started. Windows 8 provides the function of integrating ISO images as a virtual drive by default, without having to install an external program.

How do I mount an ISO image as a virtual drive using Windows 8 on-board tools?

Navigate to the ISO file in Windows Explorer and right click on it.
In the context menu choose entry "Deployn ".

Windows 8 now integrates the image as a virtual drive; after clicking on “Mount”, the content of the ISO image in the created virtual drive opens.

This can be found under its own drive letter as a DVD drive under Removable Media in Explorer and can also be used just like a real one.

How do I remove the virtual drive from Windows 8 Explorer?

Click with the right mouse button on the virtual drive and select the entry "Eject”And it's gone.
