But anyone who has to do with Windows 8 for the first time will be surprised. There is no longer any direct access, as in Windows 7 via the start button. Or rather, it already exists, of course, but the focus on touch-optimized devices has changed the path and does not open up straight away. Especially since, as always, there are different possibilities and more of them than one would initially assume.
How can I shut down or restart Windows-8?
There are several ways of shutting down Windows 8, restarting it, logging out or putting it to sleep.
The description applies to normal desktops or notebooks, operation differs for touchscreens.
- Use charms to exit Windows 8
Move the mouse to the upper right or lower right corner of the screen, this will hide the so-called Charms .
The lower of the 5 charms is a gear symbol (Settings), click on it and a dialog will appear that changes the options network identification, volume control, brightness, notifications, keyboard language settings, PC settings and also in the lower area ON OFF contains. Click in a free space on the screen to avoid the key combination affecting an active program, unless all of them have already been terminated for the shutdown. This opens another dialog "Shut down Windows".
A fold-out menu contains the options Change user, Log off, Save energy, Shut down, Hibernate (configuration-dependent) and Restart.

In the tile view, the user picture and the account name are shown at the top right. A click on it also offers options for blocking, logging out, switching accounts or changing the profile picture. A direct shutdown is not possible here.
- Use additional programs that bring back the familiar start button.
