The Notepad editor supplied with Windows XP is only a very narrow one
of its kind. Still, while there are many better alternatives, it is widely used.
It would be very helpful to have at least one ad that tells you in which line
or column of the text to be edited you are currently in.

How do I extend Notepad to display line numbers in the jam bar?
Start the registry editor with Start> Run and give in the box regedit .
Search for this key in the registry editor:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Notepad
In the right window look for StatusBar
Double click Statusbar and in dialogue Change value replace the Value 0 (Zero) through 1
Confirm with Okay and start Notepad with Start> Run> notepad
The change takes effect immediately without a restart.
