Install, use, and upgrade the Recovery Console

A damaged WindowsXP installation is possible with the recovery console
restore. It helps if even safe mode refuses to start
or there are problems with the boot manager.
In order to always have the recovery console quickly available and not every time from
To have to boot the Windows CD, it makes sense to install it permanently and transfer it to the
Integrate boot menu. Only about 7 MB of storage space is required for this.

How do I install the recovery console?

Insert the WindowsXP installation CD and enter
Start >> run
X: \ i386 \ winnt32 / cmdcons a. (X stands for the current CD drive letter)
Confirm the following query.

Possibly Setup files are updated when there is an online connection.
Then the files are copied and the next time you boot the
Recovery console available in the boot menu.

Extend the console with important functions:

The console offers very limited functions.
For example, it is not possible to control directories other than the Windows directory.
Exchangeable data carriers such as floppy disks or CDs are excluded from the file operations
wildcards aren't even allowed.

Remove the restriction to the Windows directory:

WindowsXP Professional:

Start >> execute >> gpedit.msc

Computer Configuration >> Windows Settings >> Security Settings >> Local Policies >> Security Options

In the right menu window:

Recovery Console: Activate "Allow floppy disks to be copied and allow access to all drives"

WindowsXP Home Edition:

Start >> run >> regedit
Find the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Setup \ RecoveryConsole

In the right window the entry SetCommand 1 to assign.

I describe how these extensions are used in "Use".

How to use:

When the Recovery Console is selected, a numbered list of the
existing Windows installations. The number must be entered here, followed by Enter
will. Even if it's just an installation. An "Enter" without specifying the number only starts the process from the beginning.
If a password is required, enter it now.
It makes sense to familiarize yourself with the commands that are available.
By entering help you get a list of the commands.
Information for a specific command through e.g. bootcfg /?
Entering exit exits the console.

Use of the console extension:

In the started recovery console you can use the command SET
a list of the allowed environment variables can be displayed. So the command allows
Set AllowAllPaths = True access to all directories.
The equal sign must always be between 2 spaces.
All of these entries are temporary and must be entered again when the console is restarted.

Note:

If you didn't have a boot menu until you installed the recovery console, you will get the
thus perceive a start delayed by 30 seconds (standard setting) as clearly too long.
This can be easily changed under Windows. The necessary settings can be found under
Start >> Run >> Control Panel >> System >> Advanced >> Startup and Recovery
be made. The operating system list can be displayed here
as well as the display duration of the recovery options can be changed.
This is also possible in the recovery console with, for example bootcfg / timeout 5
