Data backup with Windows XP on-board tools
At the latest after a system crash, you will be aware of an important topic again: the Data backup. In this tip I would like to show that external programs are not absolutely necessary to back up important data. To the XP function Fuse Service Pack 2 must be installed to be able to use it!
However, it may be that this function was not installed in the XP Home version.
Then it has to be installed from the Windows XP CD.
How you do this is described very well in one of our tips.

Install the backup function
To the Backup and Restore Wizard to get there we proceed as follows:
Start> Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Backup
A welcome window opens in which we simply click Continue . click
Now we come to the choice of whether we Backup or restore want.
In our case we choose here Back up files and settings .
After clicking Continue we come to the most important options.
The selection of files to be backed up.
Here we choose from predefined areas or specify our own files to be backed up.
In this example we are backing up: Own documents and settings
We need one next Specify the storage location for the backup.
To do this again on the Continue Click the button, the selection window follows.
Now we choose a storage location, in this case drive D.
It is also important to select a name for the backup so that it can be found again more quickly later.
Click on Next again.
- Backup name
- destination
- Storage files
These can still be changed with the Back button.
However, if we agree with the information, we create our backup by clicking on Complete.
Now XP takes over the data backup for us and in the worst case these can be restored.
To do this, we start the wizard again and select in image 2: Restore files and settings.
The location as well as the Backup name specify, done.
I hope this tip could induce you to do a data backup more often in between and thus have a lifeline for lost data.
