Partitioning with GParted-Live

Windows partitioning and optimizing with GParted-Live

Whether Windows 7, Windows XP, Vista or another operating system such as Linux and Co.An installation is only optimized when the hard disk is divided up accordingly, i.e. partitioned. This is the only way to achieve the recommended separation of the operating system and personal data.Partitioning with GParted
Free of charge, with the support of the NTFS, FAT16 and Fat32 file systems, a good reason why Windows users should think outside the box and take a closer look at GParted. GParted can do a lot of things that otherwise only paid programs can do.
Of course, Windows users can also follow our instructions for partitioning with Windows on-board tools, which have already helped many:
Vista - partition hard drives (enlarge / reduce)
Partition Windows 7 system partition (enlarge / reduce)

But having another tool on your backhand is always important ...
Since German instructions are rather rare, in this article I will describe the use, download, burning of the boot CD and sharing an existing partition with GParted.

The free one Partitioner GParted (Gnome Partition Editor) comes with a wide range of functions that focus on partitioning.
GParted can be freely downloaded as an ISO file and offers a Linux mini distribution after the ISO file has been burned to CD. With this the computer is booted and a Linux environment starts, from which not only all common file systems for Unix systems can be created very comfortably and the size of existing Linux partitions can be adjusted, it also comes with Microsoft's FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS rightly.

Important:

Partitioning, with whatever tool, is a drastic intervention in the structure of the hard disk.
It is very important to back up all important data on external data carriers beforehand.
Nothing is more annoying than data loss during a partitioning process without a working backup in hand.
The use of this help is at your own risk.

Download GParted

It is important to always use the latest version, even if there is still a GParted CD lying around, it makes sense to get the latest stable version from GParted-live.
So that owners of Windows can also benefit from the advantages of the open source software, there are special live versions that run on any x86 system.
Our download refers to the GParted SourceForge download page.
There select gparted-live-stable and there under the latest version either the download as a zip or ISO file.
The zip is suitable for use on a USB stick.
An ISO file can be burned directly with Nero, for example. The download has a size of approx. 117 MB

Download GParted

Burn GParted to CD

In this example we burn the downloaded ISO file gparted-live-0.5.2-1.iso with Nero.
Start Nero and select under Recorder> Burn Image
Select the ISO file and burn the CD with the default settings.
It doesn't take long and the GParted Live Boot CD is ready.

The use of GParted-Live

The computer must be booted with the CD.
To do this, it is of course necessary that the computer can be booted from CD and that the option "Start from CD / DVD" is activated in the BIOS. Many newer mainboards regulate the start with a small start menu, which can be reached with a key combination (e.g. F11 or F12) when booting.

During the start, a selection menu is shown in which various start options can be selected.
We leave it with the pre-selected entry GParted Live (default settings)which starts automatically after a few seconds without any intervention. Then the system is determined, prepared and a screen asks for the keyboard settings.
To get the German language we choose "Select Keymap from Full List".
A number of languages are offered in the following screen, German corresponds to number 10.
Enter 10 and confirm with Enter.
The next query "Which mode do you prefer?"Which means" Which mode do you prefer? "
The 0 is preselected and we press Enter without further input, which loads the appropriate settings for us.

The next screen is already the GParted partitioning surface.gparted1

The names of the hard drives and partitions

In the Linux world there is no drive C: or a hard drive 1
The first hard drive is saved as a / Dev / sda and the second as / Dev / sdb bezeichnet.
Two existing partitions on the first hard drive would be / Dev / sda1 and / Dev / sda2
So before partitioning, you should internalize this designation to ensure that the correct hard disk or partition is being processed.

In this example, I'll choose the second hard drive in the system / Dev / sdb and there the second partition / dev / sdb2
This has a size of 92,26 GB.We pinch from this one approx. 12 GB off by we on "Size change / move " . click

gparted2

In the window Change / move size the size can be adjusted using the large storage space indicator (limited by the black arrows on the right and left).
The fine-tuning of the size adjustment is done using the arrow keys on the small display, which shows the values.
If it fits, click on "Resize move".
Now there is one pending surgery at "Shrink / dev / sdb2 from 92,26 GB to 78,13 GB".
If you really want to do this, click on "Apply"and a security question opens which must be confirmed again.

Security check

gparted4

After the operation has been carried out, the message "All operations completed".
Close the dialog about "Close".
The partitions are read in again and we now have a new partition that has not yet been allocated.

The partition has been created but not yet allocated

gparted5

Now select it and click on Partition> New

gparted7

The maximum size is preselected, select "Create as the primary partition", as a file system, for example NTFS and give a "designation"confirm the process with"Add".
Now an operation is due again, confirm this again with "Apply".

gparted8

Now we have created a third additional partition on the second hard drive and partitioning is now complete.

Close gparted over the Exit button top left and choose your start option.
Remove the CD and start Windows to check whether the partition is recognized properly.
Windows may check the new partition for consistency during startup.

The partition is properly displayed in the workplace or computer.

The disk management also has nothing to complain about.

Important:
We do not guarantee that the process will be successful.
This is only an aid for partitioning with gparted.
Partitioning can lead to complete system failure if this process cannot be carried out properly.
Use it with caution and do not use any functions the purpose of which is not understood.
