Windows XP :: Concurrent Sessions under Service Pack 2

Windows XP :: Concurrent Sessions under Service Pack 2

Preface

Concurrent Sessions allows the computer user to work with 2 or more users at the same time during operation. This can be very useful when accessing the computer remotely while someone is still logged on.

This feature was integrated in the first beta version of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, but not yet activated. The last beta build to include this feature was build 2055.

Later builds didn't have this anymore. Microsoft did not explain why, even though security specialists tested the feature immediately after becoming aware of it and no security gaps were found.
However, we have found a way to integrate this feature in the final version of Service Pack 2.

In order to integrate concurrent sessions under Windows XP SP2, we take the required file from Service Pack 2 Beta Build 2055.
The file termsrv.dl_ can be found in our download area.

termsrv.dl_

Now this file, which is available in Cab format, has to be unpacked in order to integrate it into a running system.

For this we use the following command:

Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Command Prompt >> expand termsrv.dl_ termsrv.dll

After entering the command confirm with [Enter]
The extracted file termsrv.dll must now be integrated into Windows.
It should be noted that the original termsrv.dll file should be present three times:

  1. ?: Windows system32
  2. ?: Windowsssystem32dllcache
  3. ?: Windowsssystem32ServicePackFilesi386

EThere are two different options:

1. Safe Mode

The file protected by Windows File Protection can be overwritten in Safe Mode.
Presses immediately after the system start [F8] and choose in the menu Safe mode .
Now replace the original termsrv.dll.

2. Additional tool

With the help of the tool replacer Windows system files can be exchanged.

Small remarks

  1. Alternatively, the files can also be exchanged on the DOS level. Use a Windows 98 startup disk for this.
  2. If this file only exists twice, the new file must still be copied into all three folders.

After the Service Pack 2 Beta Build 2055 file has been integrated into the system, only two changes to the registry need to be made. To do this, open the registration database:

Start >> Run >> regedit

and looks for the following keys:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal Server Licensing Core

A new DWORD value called EnableConcurrentSessions with the value 1 must be created in the right window. This is done by right-clicking >> New >> DWORDWERT

2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon

The value of the entry must be in the right window AllowMultipleTSSessions on 1 be set.
That's it. From now on, a second user can also log in during operation.

Remarks

- A patch is currently not available. If someone feels "compelled", feel free ...

- Pay attention to the file permissions when using this feature.
- Questions on this topic can be asked in our forum.
