In Windows 7, as in XP and Vista, folders or files can be sorted in Explorer by name, size, date, etc. However, if you want to do a free sorting, you run into a problem with the Windows 7 operating system. Reason for an individual sorting could be, for example, arranging pictures in a folder according to your own. If you deactivated the command Automatically arrange under View in Windows - XP or - Vista and canceled the sorting function, you had the option of moving the folders and files freely on the surface.
Windows 7: Move folders freely

Hello
I have entered the registry entries according to the information. If I now right-click in the folder and go to the menu item "View", the sub-item "Arrange automatically" does not appear. Also, I still can't move the pictures anywhere within the folder.
Could you help me with my mistake?
Best regards

Hallo,
I made the entries in the regestry according to instructions and it works fine.
Use WIN 7 Home Prem 64 bit. However, one small caveat:
if a folder is opened from a library it does not work - if the same folder is opened from the directory, then it works as described.Greetings KM

Is it possible to get the normal "tiles" again instead of the "extended tiles"?

I did every step exactly as indicated, my problem is that I don't have the bottom three points on my register card at all from the last picture "View" -> arrange according to ->. For me it stops after details. What now? What did I do wrong?

I have just read through the other answers and followed the tip with "not via the Explorer but via the directory". Then it works for me too!
Thanks for the good description of the changes in the registry. I had received another link beforehand with the same procedure, but the explanations were more for people who are familiar with it. Already started with "open the registry" and then it started straight away. Before that I should know how to open it, since I haven't really lost anything if I don't know about it ???
Should I come across this question again, I will pass on the link to this statement and not the first one I received. -
why doesn't it work when I go to pictures, photos, videos in the start menu ????? :-(
it is only possible via user name and ann in pictures, videos ect go in ...... -
... I forgot if that plays a role windows 7 64bit ultimate
and it doesn't work directly over pictures from the start menu only over the loooong way username ...
that is awkward -
hello ,,,,,,,, I have your site and also that of UNAWAVE - Free arrangement of files under Windows 7
pursued with great interest ,,,,,,,,,,,,
and as an absolute layman, i did all of this ,,,, (before i had xp and found it fantastic to move the folders freely) ..........Well, because I have really followed everything exactly, but I still do not see this symbol "arrange automatically" ,,,,,,,
maybe I have arranged the "allfolders" folder incorrectly?
HKEY_USERS ...... Software / Classes / LocalSettings / Software / Microsoft / Windows / Shell / Bags (there are all folder numbers, should they be deleted?) / All Folders / Shell (with the new 5 numbers + FFlags u Mode + hex )do you still have an idea for me ,,,, that would be really wonderful ,,,,, because that with the folder annoys me totally !!!!
many greetings claudia

Hello my dear!
I'm a layman and was happy that I was able to follow all the steps and implement them
But unfortunately the free arrangement does not work ...
Regarding "which Windows 7 version is used": N / A I bought the Vaio in August 2012, Windows 7 was on it ....
For me the tab looks like this:
- Extra large icons
- Big icons
- Medium-sized icons
- Small icons
- list
- details
- tiles
- Contents... so the point "arrange automatically" does not exist (not even if I open the files with my user name) ... what now?
Thank you in advance and LG,
Franzi -
I'm already hanging in the first step.
The last shell folder in the registry does not exist for me. Does somebody has any idea? I would be very happy to hear from you.

Hallo,
first of all thanks for the great tip. Everything was wonderful (amazingly ... lol ;-)), I entered everything, made mistakes, looked, combined, corrected after I understood it (it's great fun ... :-)) and remembered everything down to the last entered after the default (the last entry, however, without double-clicking - since I'm not used to that, hope that was correct ??) now my question:
astonish astonish astonish ... shrug
the result menu (sorry, i'm totally new to handling and operating a computer ... hope my newly used laptop understands that ... lol ;-))
doesn’t exist with me - or it’s not at all apparent to me where I can find this ??? huh ??
I only have a similar folder with only the topmost, i.e. the strips marked in yellow and the left menu where view etc. is simply not available, from where can I open it?I would be very grateful for a hint, or did something go wrong while entering?
Please help

Hallo,
The move works for me but as soon as I update the folder or leave it and go back into it, my sorting is not saved.
