Hallo,
I have a problem with the XP activation.
I have updated an old notebook from SP1 to SP3. I haven't changed the hardware.
Everything worked at first. But then I was asked to activate XP. Which I did online too.
But every time I restarted I was prompted to do so again.
So I did the activation by phone and entered the number. But even with that, the same problem arises. After every restart I have to reactivate.
Windows just doesn't remember that I've already done this.
After activating, when I checked that is activated, it tells me yes.
I get into Windows by entering the number, but that's a bit annoying as it is very long.
I've already checked the XPAntispy settings, but they work.
However, I am missing the files: wgalogon.dll, wgatray.exe and checkcontrol.dll. Can it be because of that?
I have already googled but everyone says in principle that it should work with the number from the MS telephone service, which it does, but unfortunately not in the long term.
Can someone help me?
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the "cara" forum
An alternative is to de-install the WGA update, which Microsoft did not plan to do. However, you can remove the files manually and thus restore your system to its previous, functional state.
Step 1:
Go to the System32 directory of the Windows installation and rename the files Wgalogon.exe and Wgatray.exe, for example Wgalogon.bak and Wgatray.bak. Restart Windows.
Step 2:
Press the keyboard shortcut - , enter “regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll /u” and confirm with “OK”. Restart Windows.
Step 3:
Go to the System32 directory and rename the LegitCheckControl.dll file to anything.
Step 4:
Launch Regedit (via - ). Delete the keys "Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WgaLogon", " Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WGA" and "Hkey_Local_Machine\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Uninstall\WgaNotify” – or rename it. After another Windows restart, the update and warning message disappeared.
Step 5:
To ensure that the WGA update does not reside on your PC again, activate the option “Download updates, but manually set the installation time” via “Control Panel, Automatic Updates”. Before installing new updates, always check whether the WGA tool is included and, if necessary, exclude it from the installation. If it accidentally gets into the updates again, it is sufficient to refuse to accept the EULA (End User License Agreement). Then the WGA tool will not be installed -
Thank you for your response. I've tried that, but I don't have Wgalogon.exe or Wgatray.exe in the system32 directory. I cannot run “regsvr32% Windir% \ system32 \ LegitCheckControl.dll” because I don't have a LegitCheckControl.dll. The entries WgaLogon, WAG and WgaNotify are missing in the registry under the specified paths. It seems as if I don't even have the Wga, but still get the request to activate it. The only things I have in the system32 directory that are related to activation are wpa.bak and wpa.dbl. I'm pretty much at a loss.

Thank's for the Tipps. System restore didn't change anything, I'll try the repair installation now and hope it works.
