Die freie Verschlüsselungs-Software TrueCrypt ist in Version 5.0 erhältlich.
Jetzt können Anwender endlich auch die Windows-Systempartition (Vista, XP, 2003) verschlüsseln. TrueCrypt richtet dazu ein Pre-Boot-Menü auf Single- oder Multiboot-Systemen ein. Ohne das TrueCrypt-Passwort verweigert der Rechner den Start und die Daten bleiben geschützt. Eine obligatorische Rescue-CD hilft, falls Sie Ihr Passwort vergessen sollten.
Der SHA-512 Hash-Alogorithmus löst in der neuen Version SHA-1 ab; bislang aber nicht bei Systempartitionen. Außerdem werden Laufwerke nicht mehr im LRW-Modus, sondern im IEEE-Standardisierten schnelleren und sicheren XTS-Modus verschlüsselt.
TrueCrypt kann virtuelle Verzeichnisse in einer Datei anlegen, die mit 128-, 256-, oder 448-Bit-Keys verschlüsselt werden. Diese sind wie eine normale Festplatte nutzbar.
Sie können auch USB-Memory-Sticks oder Disketten auf diese Weise verschlüsseln. Die angelegte Datei ist durch ein Passwort geschützt. Der "Traveller-Modus" ermöglicht den Gebrauch von TrueCrypt, auch wenn die Software nicht auf dem System installiert ist.
