Hallo,
this is my first post and i hope someone can help me.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400
Intel Core Duo T5500 @ 1,66 GHz
256MB ATI Radeon X1400
1024 MB Ram
upgraded from Windows XP to Vista Home Premium (May 5th).
Additional software:
IncrediMail
AntiVir, freeware
My problem:
As of today I can no longer start the laptop, I tried all the options that are offered and, as requested, inserted the CD, but nothing at all works.
Only the black window opens with the various start options. Since I'm not a computer expert, I don't know what to do next.
I only use the laptop for surfing and writing mail, so I'm not a gamer.
I can't get any further, it's like an endless loop!
Does somebody has any idea???
I would be very thankful!
Laptop with Vista does not start anymore!

Hello and welcome to the forum
Try this once:
QuoteStart the computer with the last known good configuration
To start your computer with the last known good configuration: 1. Turn on your computer.
2. Press the F8 key when you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message.
3. When the Advanced Options menu for Windows appears, use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press Enter.I hope this helps you further.

-Insert the upgrade DVD-important, it must be started from the DVD and choose Startup Repair.
If that doesn't work, the other point is System Restore.

Hello Blue,
First of all thanks for the reply.
In the window I described, I was offered various options:
Safe mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (Enhanced)
I tried out the possibilities, it is always shown: "Files are being loaded" but then I always end up with the black window.

Hello Paulemann,
I tried starting with the CD, but even then I always end up with the black window (Windows troubleshooting), it does not seem to be accessing the CD at all.
That means I don't get to the point system restore either. I can only use one other laptop at the moment. -
It is important that you set the boot sequence in the BIOS on CD / DVD.
Furthermore, it could be that a boat manager is started when you press an F key while booting (F11 for me). Then select DVD / CD drive and then it works. -
@Paulemann
Thank you!
I pressed the F12 key and came to the boot menu, where I started Windows from the CD.
Now I had to enter the product key.
Now it says:
"Upgrade has been deactivated"
and there are the following options:
1. "Upgrade" (but cannot be clicked)
Below it says: "Start the installation in Windows to perform an upgrade"
or
2. "User-defined (extended)"
So I chose custom, the window "Where do you want to install Windows?"
It gives me 4 options but I don't know which one to choose because I'm afraid I'll do something wrong!
Should I start the upgrade wizard again ??? -
The upgrade wizard cannot be started either.
-
When the DVD starts, you shouldn't install it, but repair it.
Take a close look at it !!
DVD Starts> Germany> Next Menu !!!!! Below is "Computer repair options"!!!!! -
Thank you, I'll watch it again now!
I may have missed it.
I tried the following:
Via F 12 I came to "Symptom Tree", where I chose the option "Cannot boot the OS".
That’s going on right now.
Before that I clicked F12 / Diagnostics / Express Test.
Various error messages came up, e.g. OFOO: O65D
Msg: IDE device failed.
or OFOO: 131C Msg: Non recoverable hardware unit
I then canceled this process.
Thank you so much for trying so hard, I think it's really nice! -
In any case, so that you know about it in the future, try the computer repair options.
There you can have the start area or the basic install files repaired and you also have the option of performing the system restore using a restore point.
Take a look at ours too Vista Tips calmly. You can also find something about data backup here.
Otherwise think of my Sig ..

I was also annoyed that I installed the Vista upgrade, should have stayed XP ...
Will heed your advice and pay attention to the computer repair!
What I don't understand is: Yesterday evening I switched off the laptop and nothing went this morning although I didn't install any new things ?!
Greetings Mrs_Kiwi .;) -
Hello
Now I would be interested in how long Vista has been running on your lap.
Maybe Vista has also said goodbye because of its hardware requirements?
Even on my Inspiron 9400, I think Vista would be tight.
Because the Inspiron9400 is only: Windows Vista Capable. -
@Blue
I installed the Vista upgrade last Saturday (May 5th) and it ran smoothly until this morning.
My laptop is Vista Capable too. -
Kiwi,
if you had stumbled into us earlier and read this tip:
https://www.win-tipps-tweaks.de/cms/vista-tipp…en-ohne-xp.html
we probably shouldn't have had to talk about a prob to that extent.
Next time, too, feel free to ask. We are happy to help even before a problem can arise.

Paule man -
I had my laptop checked before installing it and it showed that there would be no problems! I relied on that.
The "Cannot boot the OS" is still running at the moment (there were a few error messages), when that's done I'll take a look at the computer repair options.
Greetings Kiwi -

Hooray, I'm back online! [Blocked graphic: http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/froehlich/e035.gif]
I did the following:
System recovery options, then tried "Windows Complete PC Recovery". Did not work.
Next, "System Restore" didn't work either.
Finally, "Startup Repair", which I then had to do twice and that's how it finally worked!
Man, I might be relieved!
I hadn't even seen the point "System repair". [Blocked graphic: http://www.cosgan.de/images/smilie/konfus/d040.gif]
It was really nice that you took the time to help me!
Thank you so much for that !!!

Greetings from Mrs_Kiwi -
Of course, one question arises now.
Why is the "Startup Repair" option even offered?
Then the problem with Windows must be known, why don't you do anything about it? -

I find it a bit strange. -
Kiwi....
Now be honest with yourself! How often did XP system crashes for the simplest things etc. You had to shimmy through thousands of forums to try to get your system going again. In the end, there was often only the tedious reinstallation.
-----------------------
Vista now offers working system recovery options for the first time, which should not simply be interpreted as errors in the system. It is a help to give crash-willing users under the arms. Or where do you think 90 percent of the problem lies with crashes or system refusals .........?! -
