Hi all,
the Windows event viewer on my computer does not start anymore and refers to the event log service. This is set to automatic start, but not started. A manual start is refused with the error message:
The Windows Event Log service on Local Computer failed to start.
Error 4201: The instance name was not recognized as a valid name by the WMI data provider.
Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 (installed January 2009) + current updates, Avira Antivir PE (8.2), PC Tools Firewall Free (5.0) is used. The COM Windows Optimizer 4.07 was last used in January of this year. The hardware probably doesn't play a role in this context. I am currently logged in as an administrator with full access.
I check the event viewer regularly. So far everything has worked without any problems.
This was preceded by an update of the PC Tools firewall. after a restart it could no longer be started. A look at the event viewer ended with the above error message. A system restore immediately before the firewall update and another about 2 weeks ago (when the event viewer definitely still worked) did not produce a positive result.
A search on the web and win-tips tweaks brought up some clues. Most users only helped with a new installation. The WGAPlugin (KB930955) downloaded from Microsoft did not help, even after a restart.
Does anyone have experience and / or solutions to this problem?
