Hi all,
I'm looking for a program with which I can set the background of a .png image to transparent. I have already downloaded and tried a few, some of which cannot even open the .png's. Then I read something about background under IrvanView, but found nothing on me where I could click ... and now the random download has become too stupid for me.
Question: Does anyone know of a program with which I can just (batch mode would be great) set the background (black) to transparent?

So there are basically tons of options from free to very expensive and from mediocre to professional. Photoshop is by far the best and is also used the most in the professional environment. For private users, however, it is quite expensive, mainly because you can't buy a one-time license for it, as it used to be, but now have to take out a subscription by paying monthly. Can certainly be an advantage for shorter projects, but if you want to use it permanently, it will certainly hurt at this point.
But there are alternatives. In that case, I think Gimp would be the best known and perhaps also the best. Similar to Photoshop, however, you have to acquire a lot first and that takes up a lot of time. The good thing is that you can now find a YouTube tutorial for ALMOST every problem, in which everything is explained step by step. As far as I know, it comes very close to Photoshop in terms of functions. I think a trained graphic designer could tell you in detail at which point it gets bumpy at Gimp, but as I said, my knowledge is not enough. I only know that when I downloaded it, I didn't find the user interface so intuitive and therefore gave up quickly.
Otherwise there are other programs such as Pixlr Editor or PicMonkey, but they don't come close to PS or Gimp in terms of scope. I have picked out an information page here that takes a close look at all software: https://hosting.1und1.de/digitalguide/w…ativen-gibt-es/
Below is a summary table that explains which file formats are supported in the individual programs. I hope this helps with the selection. -

I also recommend that, I use it for a long time and get along very well with it.

I tried Gimp for a while, but well, somehow that wasn't exactly my thing. I was hoping to get on with it better, but that was kind of a total letdown. But that's just my opinion. There are others for whom this works well. I think it's a type thing anyway.

Photoshop CS2 is also completely free and you can really do a lot with it
